Can you imagine how popular a place like this would be in Parkdale?
Me and my super cool roomie (MSCR) made the voyage across the ice road on foot. It was a scenic, albeit long journey, that you can read about here.
Once we arrived at our destination, Moosonee Community Centre, we were like ebony and ivory popsicles. We quickly warmed up and joined in the fun already in full swing. The night's raison d'etre? Why none other than the Ducks Unlimited Canada fundraising event. It's the 75th anniversary in case you don't know; supporting wetland conservation since 1938.
MSCR and our new black friend
Upon arrival, I was immediately struck by the presence of ANOTHER BLACK PERSON. Obviously, we immediately packed up, all the while assiduously pretending not to notice one another. We "ended up" "accidentally" sitting directly across from each other at dinner. By night's end we were gabbing like schoolgirls and made plans for karaoke next week.
First on was a super cool silent auction offering rare treasures such as this decorative fan (scroll down pls) and these super cute duck-camo shotguns--only $40 for a 1/40 chance to win! I especially like the way they match with this duck-camo chair, and a random hipster's duck-camo coat! I wanted to do the whole set, but the hipster wouldn't part with his jacket. I suspect his inner style compass had him lusting after the look as well---he didn't want me upstaging his rep...
Immediately following dinner, we were entertained by the verbal stylings of a live auctioneer, who was also a voodoo specialist. I say this because he enticed 16 people to spend $200 each on a--you guessed it!--duck-camo folding chair with an insulated compartment to store beer. It was a marvel to behold. I was actually fearful that I too would fall prey to his hypnotic siren song. Somehow I resisted.
And now for the best part, the swag bags! Everyone got a nifty calendar and blanket featuring the Ducks Unlimited logo--I am going to make SO MUCH MONEY when I sell these on Craigslist back in Tdot! Amaze!
Tired, happy, and fully satiated, we hitched a ride home with our new friends around approx 9pm. I gotta say, other cities in Canada really have a lot to learn from Moosonee about the art and style of Saturday night entertainment. Also about how real hipsters kick it.
I really wanted this decorative fan, but my $10 bid was insufficient. The "winner" paid $75.
